Speech & Language

  • Trouble learning new words and saying sentences, following directions, or understanding questions. Some children have problems with both expressing themselves and understanding.

  • Atypical production of speech sounds characterized by substitutions, omissions, additions or distortions that may interfere with intelligibility.

  • Interruptions in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and repetitions in sounds, syllables, words, and phrases. This may be accompanied by excessive tension, struggle, and secondary behaviors.

  • A motor speech disorder, characterized by difficulty in the planning and programming of muscle movements necessary for intelligible speech.

  • Difficulty with the use of verbal and nonverbal language for social purposes such as play, conversation, and participating in community settings.

Feeding

Difficulties with eating in areas of disruptive or inappropriate mealtime behaviors, oral processing or chewing, delay in mastering self-feeding skills, refusal and aversive reactions to foods, and psychosocial aspects of mealtime.

Occupational Therapy

  • Fine motor skills involve the coordination of small muscles in the hands and fingers to perform precise movements (writing, playing, self-feeding etc.)

  • Sensory processing is the brain's ability to receive, interpret, and respond to sensory information from the environment. Problems with sensory processing impact a child's ability to focus, participate in social activities, and react appropriately to sensory input.

  • The ability to conceive, organize, and execute physical movements smoothly and efficiently. This includes activities like running, jumping, writing, and manipulating objects.

  • The interpretation and understanding of visual information from the eyes. This skill is essential for recognizing shapes, patterns, colors, and spatial relationships. Effective visual processing is crucial for tasks like reading, writing, navigating environments, and understanding visual cues in daily activities.

  • These include tasks like dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and bathing. Developing these skills is essential for fostering independence and confidence in individuals, particularly in children as they grow.
